Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia
Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia called on Muslims and Christians to unite against the emerging threat of terror by speaking to religious groups.
Dr. Bawumia said that the time has come for people of both religions to unite against the enemy.
He spoke at the annual evening of power held Wednesday by the Muslim caucus of Parliament.
Governments in the subregion are on high security alert following a terrorist alert targeting churches and the Christian community.
Development, which until recently was limited to Nigeria, affected neighboring Burkina Faso three times in less than two weeks.
Reuters reported that unidentified badailants killed four Catholics and destroyed a statue of the Virgin Mary in northern Burkina Faso, a bishop said. This is a third deadly attack on Christians in this West African country in two weeks.
For his part, the leader of the majority, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, welcomed the vice president's call and asked people of both religions not to fall for religious polarization.
Haruna Iddrisu, leader of the minority, said the recent visit of the national Imam leader to a church was worthy of emulation.
Responding to the terrorist alert, the Ghana police have urged the church leadership to pay special attention to the safety of children who gather in their auditoriums.
DSP Afia Tenge said that the security of the church was structured to meet the needs of adult members who were neglected by children.
However, "children are very vulnerable," she observed, adding "that you can go to any Sunday school and choose [steal] a child and that's all.
Speaking as part of the Joy FM Christian Family Program, "A Walk With Jesus" on Sunday, she also urged church leaders to question the suspicious characters who frequent their premises.
