Tesla says model Y will arrive in 2020 – TechCrunch

The automaker, who has not yet shown a prototype of the vehicle, has announced that it will begin to tool model Y this year. And unlike other Tesla electric vehicles, the Y model will likely be produced in the company's huge "gigafactory" in Nevada, Musk said in a profit call.

Musk has adopted a bullish tone for the Y model, anticipating that the volume of sales of the vehicle will be higher than that of its new model 3.

Tesla also anticipates that the cost of the Model Y production line will be significantly lower than that of California's Fremont Model 3 because it will be built on the same platform and will share approximately 75% of its components with Model 3 .

The Y model's production ramp should also be faster, according to the company's forecast.

Producing the Y model at the gigafactory should reduce the risk of execution as well as the costs of moving parts from Nevada to California, where Model 3 is badembled, said Musk.

"This year should be really exciting for Tesla," said the company in its letter to shareholders. "Model 3 will become a global product, the profitability of our business should become permanently positive, our new Gigafactory Shanghai should start producing cars and we will start to equip Y model production."
