It is increasingly likely that Tesla is producing the Y model at Gigafactory 1 in Nevada every day and we are now learning that the manufacturer is currently installing molded lines at the factory.
According to rumors, Gigafactory 1 would be the production site of MOdel Y, but Tesla refused to confirm it.
In its fourth quarter earnings report, Tesla said it wants the Y model to reach "most likely" volume production at Gigafactory 1 next year.
Tesla says that he will start spending tooling on the Y model this year.
CEO Elon Musk confirmed that Model 3 would share 75% of its parts with Model Y, but that Model Y would still need a different body.
In a job offer for a CFB process technician at his Lathrop plant, Tesla wrote that this role would include moving to Nevada to help build casting lines at Gigafactory 1.
Molding lines are often used to build body parts.
Tesla transferred its foundry production capacity to Lathrop to supply parts to the Fremont mill, which is at full capacity.
Since, the company has removed the listing referencing employment at Lathrop by switching to Gigafactory 1, but other job offers in Lathrop are referring to new casting lines and a new foundry.
Tesla describes the role of a Merger process Engineer at Lathrop:
"You will be an integral part of the new Materials Engineering organization and will continue our mission to provide materials, processes and methods of liaison that equip Tesla's engineers and manufacturing facilities with competitive advantage in their mission of designing and producing products that accelerate the transition to sustainable energy. You will lead the integration and commissioning of our electrical fusion equipment, we will establish our foundry and we will lead the development of our new aluminum die casting processes. "
The manufacturer strengthened its presence in Lathrop to support the production of its vehicles in Fremont.
Tesla built a new giant building in the city, located about an hour east of Tesla's Fremont factory.
As for Gigafactory 1, Tesla has been expanding the building for years. It is unclear whether Tesla can establish Y model production at the plant without enlarging the building.
