One of the most interesting elements of the Tesla results teleconference yesterday was the announcement of the departure of CTO, founder of the company and co-founder of the company, JB Straubel. Straubel will remain involved with Tesla in an advisory committee, which is essentially a very corporate way of saying he's gone.
"I want to thank JB for his fundamental role in creating and building Tesla," Musk said at one point in the conference call. "If we had not had lunch in 2003, Tesla would not exist."
Commenting on his departure, Straubel stressed that he remained optimistic about Tesla's future prospects. Indeed, it does not appear that Straubel is going away because of frictions with the company or a fundamental disagreement with Musk. Straubel wants instead to play a more active role in Redwood Materials, a recycling-focused start-up that began about two years ago.
"I do not go away," said Straubel, "and I just wanted to make sure people understand that there is no lack of trust in society or in the team, or something like that. "
Although far from a well-known name, Straubel played a decisive role in helping set up Tesla. During his nearly two decades at Tesla, Straubel has contributed to some of the company's key achievements and technological innovations. Suffice to say that his departure from the CTO position represents a huge loss for Tesla.
After Straubel's departure, Tesla veteran Drew Baglino will take over the position of CTO.
The most important point here is that Tesla seems to have a constant problem when it comes to keeping the best talent. In recent years, for example, Tesla has hired a number of people to run its autopilot division. In addition, the company has lost a long list of engineering talent in recent years.
