Tesla is working on a new electric motor upgrade for the Model S and Model X with a more efficient permanent magnet reluctance system based on the Tesla engine developed for Model 3.
As we announced earlier this week, sales of Tesla's S and X models collapsed in the first quarter.
We found that anticipating hardware upgrades and updating the design of these vehicles could affect current demand.
Last year, we announced that Tesla was planning to update the interior architecture for the second half of 2019.
We learned that Tesla also planned a powertrain upgrade for the S and X models.
According to sources close to the record, Tesla has begun to include references to the new S and X model engines in the latest software updates.
The new electric motors, called "Raven", are reluctance motors with permanent magnets, like those of model 3.
With the S and X models, Tesla has been using AC induction electric motors for years, but the company has opted for permanent magnet electric motors at the introduction of Model 3 in 2017.
Konstantinos Laskaris, Tesla's leading engine designer, explained the logic of this move in an interview with Charged last year:
"It is well known that permanent magnet machines benefit from the pre-excitation of magnets. You benefit from an advantage in terms of efficiency. Induction machines have a perfect flow control and you can optimize your efficiency. Both are sensible for the variable drive single gear transmission as the cars drive units.
So, as you know, our model 3 now has a permanent magnet machine. Indeed, for the specification of performance and efficiency, the permanent magnet machine has better solved our cost-saving function, and was optimal for the target range and performance.
On a quantitative level, the difference is what determines the future of the machine. It's a compromise between the cost of the engine, the range and the cost of the battery that determines which technology will be used in the future.
The more efficient electric motor contributes to the impressive range of Model 3 more significantly than some people think.
According to people familiar with the subject, the engine model 3 can record a performance greater than 97%, against about 93% for engines of model S and model X.
The average gap is even larger in traffic jams where the Model 3 electric motor is much more efficient than Tesla's alternative induction motors.
Upgrading the motors with the existing batteries can add a few tens of extra kilometers to the Model S and Model X.
The timing of the electric motor upgrade of the S and X models is not entirely clear, but it could happen quite quickly, according to people familiar with the subject.
The upgrade could also be accompanied by other hardware upgrades to increase the load rate of the S and X models.

The new specifications powered by the new engines are still unknown, but we expect decent range and power.
As we announced earlier this week, sales of Tesla Model S / X dropped significantly in the last quarter.
This hardware upgrade could certainly help sales of both models. It also comes just before a series of new and competing electric vehicles are commercialized and could help Tesla maintain its competitive edge over vehicles such as the Audi e-tron and the Taycan Porsche.
