The 2022 World Cup could be my last

Brazilian star Neymar has said that next year’s World Cup in Qatar could be the last of his career.

The 29-year-old Paris Saint-Germain forward’s comments were made in the documentary “Neymar & The Line Of Kings”, produced by DAZN. An excerpt was posted on the channel’s Twitter feed on Sunday.

“Dude, I think this will be my last World Cup,” Neymar said. “I’m facing it like the last World Cup because I don’t know if I can mentally endure more football.”

“I will do my best to make it happen very well,” he added. “I will do all I can to win with my country and realize my dream, the biggest since I was a child.”

Neymar played Brazil’s 0-0 draw against Colombia later Sunday in a World Cup qualifier. The Selection leads the 10-team round robin with 28 points after 10 games. Neymar missed last week’s 3-1 win in Venezuela due to suspension.

Brazil coach Tite was asked about Neymar’s inferior performance, which included 17 missed passes and 30 loss of possession.

“He is an exceptional player because he makes exceptional plays, he does it in an exceptional and unusual way,” said the Brazil coach. “He is a special player, we know that. And he was also well marked, sometimes by two players.”

The game at Barranquilla marked Neymar’s first international game since the 2-0 victory over Peru on September 10, in which he delivered a key performance from Brazil with an assist and a goal. Despite his best efforts, Neymar made it clear after the game that he was unhappy with the treatment he was receiving at home.

“I don’t know what else I have to do with this jersey to make people respect Neymar,” he said. Local media accused the striker of being out of form in Chile’s 1-0 victory earlier in September, prompting the forward to walk around shirtless during training in a bid to demonstrate his fitness.

Against Peru, Neymar overtook Romário as Brazil’s top scorer in the World Cup qualifiers, with 12 goals. He’s also approaching Pelé’s record of 77 official goals for Brazil. Neymar has scored 69 times for Brazil.

He has already played two World Cups. In 2014, he injured his back in the quarter-finals against Colombia, which kept him from playing in the shocking 7-1 semi-final loss to Germany.

In the last edition of the tournament, Neymar had just returned from a serious foot injury and put in an unimpressive performance in Brazil’s 2-1 quarter-final loss to Belgium. He left Russia 2018 amid fierce criticism for his seemingly overreaction to the fault.

Neymar won the 2013 Confederations Cup title with Brazil and also won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He was injured ahead of the 2019 Copa America, which Brazil won at home.
