While he had a reputation for being tense and cranky, Scott Patterson Gilmore girls the character had a big heart. Luke Danes took care of the people of Stars Hollow, although he might not admit it, and would actually get cranky if someone accused him of caring too much.
Luke had a sad life and that made him empathize with others, but it also made him a difficult person to be around at times. While Luke could make frustrating decisions, he was also an important part of the small town he lived in and helped people when he could.
ten Boring: his rule without cell phones
A lot of Gilmore girls took place at Luke’s Diner with Lorelai and Rory passing by at least once a day. They had their muffins and donuts and, of course, coffee there, along with most of their food.
Luke was relaxed in some ways and nervous in others. One annoying thing he did was put up a “no cell phone” sign in his restaurant. Of course, it made sense that he didn’t want people to sit and chat for hours on end, but it definitely went a bit too far.
9 Sweetest: he hired Lane at the Diner
In the fourth season, Luke agreed to hire Lane at the restaurant and she cared a lot about doing a good job.
Lane was often in episodes with Rory as they were best friends, so it was always nice to see her having her own stories. Luke could seem mean at times, but he always did nice things for the people of the city. He could never hear that someone around him was struggling without doing something for him.
8 Annoying: he wouldn’t propose to Lorelai
Everyone loves Luke and Lorelai. But when these characters got engaged, it’s because it was Lorelai who asked the question. Why wouldn’t Luke propose to the woman he loved and promise her forever?
It was super frustrating, because Luke had been in love with Lorelai for so long and he should have appreciated the fact that they were finally together. He would act like he wanted to engage and then withdraw in a weird way.
seven Sweetest: he took Jess when he knew nothing about teens
Jess had a hard life and it made sense that he wasn’t nice to Luke when he lived with him, but it was still hard to watch Jess treat Luke so badly.
When Luke was there for his sister Liz and let Jess stay with him, it was an incredibly sweet gesture. He also got really invested in Jess and did all he could, although most of the time it was dramatic and utter chaos. Most people would have said no to that, especially if they didn’t already have kids, but Luke often tried to do the right thing.
6 Annoying: he got too jealous
It seems like some people are more prone to jealousy than others, but most of the time, if a relationship is happy and healthy, there’s certainly no reason to feel envious of a third party.
Unfortunately, Luke became so jealous of Lorelai’s relationship with Christopher that it caused a lot of trouble in their romance. It was boring, for Lorelai was clearly with him, and the whole town knew how much Lorelai loved him.
5 Sweetest: He let Taylor open a soda store
Taylor’s Olde Fashion Soda Shoppe was right next to Luke’s restaurant, and Luke was cool with it, as he was the owner of the building and allowed Taylor to set it up.
Taylor was an integral part of Stars Hollow’s life and although Luke was often angry with him, the two got to get along for a brief moment, and it was really nice to watch. Some people might tell Taylor that the old-fashioned shop was a bad idea and that Luke’s support was kind.
4 Annoying: he would stubbornly freeze Lorelai
Lorelai got involved in her fair share of accidents and she never claimed to be a perfect human being, but she didn’t deserve the way Luke often behaved.
Whenever they had a fight or something to deal with, Luke totally freezes Lorelai. His stubborn nature made him act this way, and while it could have been something he wanted to change about himself, he continued to behave in an immature way. It was really frustrating to watch and it was one of the most boring things about this character.
3 Sweetest: He made Lorelai a chuppah for his marriage to Max
It was difficult for Luke to watch Lorelai date Max and when she got engaged he was definitely having a horrible time dealing with this news.
But while most people were simmering and whining, Luke was busy working on a wedding present. He built a wooden chuppah for Lorelai and Max’s wedding, and it was an incredibly nice thing to do. It was even sweeter the fact that he was in love with Lorelai. She was amazed at this gift and it meant so much to her. It really proved that they are an integral part of everyone’s life.
2 Annoying: he didn’t think Lorelai could understand his daughter
April Nadini was a difficult character for fans to watch. Luke definitely handled the whole situation badly, which made matters worse.
Luke didn’t think Lorelai could understand his daughter or the fact that he was now deep in the world of parenting. It was one of the most boring things Luke had ever done, because of course Lorelai knew how to help raise a girl, as she had a wonderful relationship with Rory.
1 Sweetest: He let Lorelai use his truck to move Rory to Yale
It was a big deal for all of the Stars Hollow when Rory left for Yale, as she was definitely the quirky and gorgeous town’s golden child.
Luke let Lorelai use his truck to help Rory get into his dorm, and it was an incredibly selfless gesture on his part. Of course, Lorelai took forever, as she had never really had a sense of time, but Luke was as patient as he could be.
