Suspects with police
Afi Fiaku – the mother of the 42-year-old woman who allegedly stole a year-old baby in Takoradi – told DAILY GUIDE what might have forced her daughter, Mawusi Rose Fiaku, to commit so-called crime.
According to the mother, the unrelenting pressure of Rose's boyfriend Lawrence Lartey on her daughter to give birth to a son at any price may have contributed to the problem.
Afi Fiaku, a soap maker in Effiakuma near Takoradi, claimed that Lartey had permeated his daughter but had never seen the 33-year-old Mason until the incident occurred.
"The man did not bother to look for the family members of the lady she had impregnated and who would have traveled," she said.
"Unfortunately, my daughter had a miscarriage and it hurt her health. So I had to take care of her, "she revealed.
In an interview, Ms. Fiaku told DAILY GUIDE, at his home in Effiakuma, that when the boyfriend returned from his alleged trip, his daughter could not tell him that she had miscarried and made her believe that she had just given birth.
"So, Lartey, a Togolese, started to pressure my daughter and sometimes beat her to ask her to bring the child. So Rose had to pick up her own friend's kids at the market and present them to the boyfriend as their child, "she said.
She continued, "Immediately, the child was sent to Lartey, a Muslim. The first thing he should have done was to inquire with us as to whether Mawusi actually had a child. When he came to see me, I would have told him that my daughter had had a miscarriage.
Ms. Fiaku stated that if her daughter really wanted to steal the baby, she would have gone to another place outside of Sekondi-Takoradi with the baby.
Mawusi's disease
She claimed that the miscarriage had affected Rose's psyche, which would have been admitted to the hospital on the first day of her arrest in court.
"Mawusi should have received a blood transfusion at Sekondi's Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital on the same Tuesday when she was brought to the Takoradi District Court for theft of children," she said. -she adds.
Is she a seamstress?
Ms. Fiaku said her daughter was interested in sewing and wanted to become a seamstress. She stated, however, that "because of her situation, she could not finish her apprenticeship with a seamstress in Takoradi.
Mental badessment
It will be remembered that last Friday, during the hearing, Afi Fiaku told the court that her daughter may be suffering from a mental disorder.
The court ordered the police to conduct a psychiatric examination of the accused before the next hearing.
Meanwhile, the alleged boyfriend on a conspiracy charge was given a 10,000 GH ¢ bond with two sureties.
Both are expected to reappear on April 26, 2019.
Rose Fiaku pleaded guilty to stealing a child, but Lartey denied any wrongdoing.
She reportedly stole her mother's one-year-old baby around 4:30 pm in front of the Market Circle post office in Takoradi last Friday.
She first posed as a client and asked the mother to allow her to take care of her two children to better serve the clients.
Fortunately, a closed circuit television (CCTV) of some banks in the area captured the woman, who was cuddling the baby as she walked away from the market.
