Toby Alderweireld insisted that he was fully focused on playing for Tottenham, despite lingering rumors linking him to a club start this summer.
Aged 30, arrived from Atletico Madrid in 2015, he enters the last year of his contract at the Spurs and has a clause in his contract stating that he can move on to something else if a bid of 25 million pounds sterling arrives.
This release clause is significantly lower than the valuation of the Belgian price by the Spurs, but there seems to have been very little concrete interest in the back center.
Roma would be the only team to launch an investigation about Alderweireld while the Spurs hope it will remain – the clause expires Friday 26 July.
After receiving the armband for the 3-2 win of the International Champions Cup against Juventus in Singapore, Alderweireld "I always said, I focused on the Spurs and I was trying to do the job I had to do.
"In football, everything can go fast, but I'm focusing on the Spurs and getting ready for the start of the season.
"The manager knows that I am committed to the team and the club. Today, I was named captain, which shows the confidence of the manager in me. "
Alderweireld, who already had ties to Manchester United and PSG, has been hit a bit since moving to North London and is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.
However, he has so far hesitated to extend his contract with the club and if he is not sold this summer, he can not leave for anything in a year.
