The Comoros have an unstable political history since independence in 1975 and have suffered more than 20 coup attempts, four of which have been successful.

Azali came to power by a coup d'etat, then led the country between 1999 and 2006 and was re-elected in 2016.

Observers and community groups questioned the credibility of the election, which allowed Azali to declare the winner with nearly 61% of the vote.
