The African Union has threatened Monday to suspend Sudan after the coup last week that had resulted in the ousting of Omar al-Bashir by the army after nearly three decades of power.
If the junta does not hand over power to civilians within 15 days, the AU will suspend "Sudan's participation in all activities of the AU until the order constitutionally restored, "said the body's Peace and Security Council (PSC) in a statement.
Bashir led Sudan with an iron fist for 30 years before being sacked last week as a result of mbad protests that have shaken the country since December.
Protesters remained in the streets, demanding a return of civilian power to the military council that replaced Bashir.
The AU has endorsed the protesters' claims, calling the military intervention a "coup d'etat," which the (PSC) strongly condemns. "
The body, which has 55 member states, added that "an army-led transition would be totally contrary to the aspirations of the Sudanese people."
The AU is taking a tough stance against coups and has suspended Egypt and the Central African Republic in 2013 as a result of coups in both countries. Both have since re-established their membership.
