Police arrested a key suspect of the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale in mid-January.

Police arrested Abdul Rashid Meizongo, 29, in a shopping center in Accra, and is currently participating in the investigations. Another is currently in custody for the same crime, while 13 others have been questioned.

Hussein-Suale was part of a team led by award-winning journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, whose investigation led to the resignation of the president of the Ghana Football Federation, Kwesi Nyantakyi.

Dozens of football referees and officials from several countries were also banned as a result of the investigation, including coach of the Nigerian national team, Salisu Yusuf, for receiving money from undercover journalists posing as agents.

Hussein-Suale was shot in the neck and chest by unidentified gunmen as he was returning home to Madina, police said. Anas tweeted: "Sad news, but we will not be silenced. Rest in peace, Ahmed.

Hussein-Suale had previously complained to the police after a Ghanaian politician, Kennedy Agyapong, showed his picture on a private television channel.

Agyapong promised to pay supporters who would have retaliated against Saddam Hussein. "This boy who is very dangerous, he lives here in Madina. So he comes here, beat him," he said, highlighting Hussein-Suale's image.

Agyapong himself rejected claims that he allegedly "organized the badbadination" of Hussein-Suale, saying on local radio Neat FM: "He never hurt me, so they should go investigate those he's offended, not me, he and his boss [Anas] have offended so many people in this country. The harm that they have done will follow them. "

The Committee for the Protection of Journalists called for an immediate investigation and that the Ghanaian authorities "ensure that threats against the press are taken seriously".
