The appeal of President Ghosn, former president of Nissan, dismissed

TOKYO – Japan's Supreme Court said Thursday that it had rejected the appeal of former Nissan president Carlos Ghosn's lawyers against the extension of his detention after his fourth arrest on charges financial misconduct.

The decision confirms the extension of his detention until April 22, approved Monday by the Tokyo District Court.

The Supreme Court ruling was released on Wednesday and released to foreign media on Thursday.

Ghosn was arrested for the first time in November and accused of failing to report his retirement compensation and breach of trust. He was released on bail on March 6, but was re-arrested on April 4 on new allegations and returned to custody.

The re-emergence of a bail suspect, who is only allowed after indictment, is rare and has prompted criticism of the Japanese criminal justice system, in which lengthy detentions during investigations are commonplace.

Ghosn, who led Nissan for nearly 20 years and likely turned the company into bankruptcy, denied any wrongdoing.

As part of a separate legal maneuver, the Tokyo District Court dismissed a call from Ghosn's lawyers challenging the confiscation by prosecutors of the video of the security camera installed in Ghosn's apartment, reported Thursday Kyodo News. The court did not answer the calls after office hours.

Last week, Nissan shareholders voted to remove Ghosn from the company's board of directors.

In his video statement filmed before his arrest and published by his lawyers on April 9, Mr. Ghosn accused some Nissan executives of plotting against him for unfounded fears of losing their autonomy to their partner. in the French Alliance Renault SA.
