According to a study published April 3 in the open access journal, the application of sun protection factor (SPF) moisturizers tends to miss more face, especially around the eyelid regions, compared to the application of sunscreen. Many moisturizers contain an SPF equivalent to those found in sunscreens, but research is lacking to know how the application of this moisturizing agent compares to sunscreens in terms of coverage achieved and protection offered. Previously, Hamill and his team had demonstrated that users were incompletely covering their eyelid regions when routinely applying sunscreen. In the new study, researchers sought to determine whether users of SPF moisturizers also displayed these trends. Eighty-four participants were exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and photographed with a UV-sensitive camera during two separate visits. At the first visit, images were acquired before and after the application of sunscreen or SPF30 moisturizer, then at the second visit, the study was repeated with the other formulation.
The application was significantly worse for moisturizer than for sunscreen in terms of missing whole face area (11.1% missed with sunscreen, versus 16.6% for SPF Moisturizer) . This difference was mainly due to decreased coverage of the eyelid regions (14.0% missed with sunscreen, 20.9% moisturizer).
A post-study questionnaire revealed that participants were not aware of their incomplete coverage. Despite the potential benefits of increasing the frequency of moisturizer use, areas of the face with higher cancer risk are likely not protected and participants are not aware of their risk. According to the authors, other sun protection strategies and further public awareness campaigns should be promoted.
The authors add: "When applying sunscreen and a moisturizer, the area around the eyes is often forgotten, especially near the nose. Participants covered a smaller area of the face using a moisturizer compared to sunscreen.We therefore conclude that special attention should be paid to When applying an SPF cream, you should consider other methods of eyelid protection, such as only sunglbades with UV filter.The application of a moisturizer is not as effective as a sunscreen.Therefore, if you plan for prolonged exposure to the sun, we will recommend using a sunscreen.add one with SPF: while SPF is better than nothing, but it should not be considered sunscreen.
