Works for the temporary transformation of the Arc de Triomphestarted on Friday July 16. For 16 days, the iconic monument will be wrapped in 25,000 square meters of recyclable silver-blue fabric and 3,000 meters of red rope as a posthumous realization of the work of Bulgarian artist Christo, who died in 2020.
The project, supported by the Center Pompidou and labeled by the City of Paris and the Elysée, will be inaugurated on September 18 and will last until October 3.
“As soon as the commemorations of July 14 are over, the worksite will settle down smoothly until July 18, the date of the arrival of the Tour de France. It is only afterwards that it will be in full swing, under time constraints. working tirelessly to finish it, “Christo’s nephew, Vladimir Javacheff, told AFP news agency.
“As for the dismantling, it will have to be done in six days”, before the commemoration of November 11, he added.
From July 20, a metal vault will be installed under the main arch, before the installation of the protective cages of the large sculpted groups.
The ropes and canvases will be delivered at the end of August and the installation will take place the week before the opening on September 18.
The project is funded by the Vladimir Javacheff Foundation, through the sale of Christo’s works which includes collages, preparatory drawings, models and lithographs.
Christo, who died last year in New York City at the age of 84, had been working on the project for decades. He had dreamed of creating “The Arc de Triomphe, Envelopé”, which will be completed 36 years after the successful envelopment of the Pont-Neuf.
According to the Center des monuments nationaux, the Eternal Flame, in front of the tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Arc de Triomphe, will continue to burn throughout the preparation and exhibition of the work.
