Dr Henry Herbert Lartey, leader of the Consolidated Great People’s Party (GCPP), on Monday called the “balanced” nature of Ghana’s 8th Parliament good for the country’s growing democracy.
He said that this would ensure that the parliament functions efficiently and independently, adding that it clearly shows that Ghana is developing gradually but steadily in democratic governance.
Dr Lartey, in an interview with Ghana News Agency in Accra, welcomed the election of Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as Speaker of Parliament, stressing that this shows that the country has become a beacon of democracy not only on the continent but around the world. .
“It is unthinkable to have a member of the opposition chairing parliament in most emerging democracies, but Ghana has set the tone not only with a suspended parliament, but with the Speaker of Parliament on the side of the opposition, ”explained Dr Lartey.
Dr Lartey, also Secretary General of the Association of Political Parties of West Africa, analyzing the events that led to the inauguration of the 8th Parliament and the swearing in of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the second term Jan. 7, applauded the nation’s development.
The head of the GCPP said that while there was some confusion at the start of the election of the Speaker of Parliament, however, the country was able to prove that it fully understood and applied the principles of democracy.
He said it was a laudable step in our democratic growth from which other African countries must learn.
He said he looked forward to seeing effective collaboration between President Akufo-Addo and the bipartisan leadership in parliament, contrary to views expressed by others that there would be friction between the two leaders because they belonged to different parties.
Dr Lartey said the country must prioritize its democratic growth and unity to facilitate the necessary economic growth and development, asserting that “our democracy is the foundation of our development”.
He congratulated President Akufo-Addo on his inauguration and said his party, the GCPP, was determined to work with him during his second term.
He said the president, in his second term, should prioritize youth employment and job creation through his industrialization program, as well as promoting the use of renewable energy. .
He also, on behalf of the Association of Political Parties of West Africa, congratulated other world leaders, especially those from the sub-region who participated in the eventful inauguration of the President of Ghana on January 7. .
He said African leaders must continue to move forward towards operationalizing the objectives of the African Union.
