PARIS (Reuters) – A ban on sales to Chinese telecom equipment manufacturers would add about 55 billion euros to the cost of 5G networks in Europe, according to an industry badysis that Reuters is helping.

This figure is part of a report by the GSMA Telecom lobbying group and reflects the total additional costs involved in a total ban on the sale of Huawei Technologies and Chinese ZTE for the deployment of 5G networks in Europe.

"Half of this would be due to the high input costs of European operators following a significant loss of competition in the mobile equipment market," the report says.

"In addition, operators will need to replace the existing infrastructure before implementing 5G upgrades."
