Accra, July 18, GNA – The Wildlife Division
Forestry Commission has announced the banning of hunting and catching activities
animals, which is called "closed season", starting August 1st to December
2019.

The closing season is one of the measures used to
regulate the use and help curb the decline of wildlife resources in the
country and ensure sustainable use while providing animal respite
during their breeding season.

A statement signed by Mr. John Allotey,
Deputy Director-General of the Forestry Commission, said during this period that the
hunting, capture or destruction of any wild species was prohibited.

However, he said, the only animal that
could be hunted during the closed season was grbadcutter and that should be
made with a valid permit issued by the Wildlife Division of the Forest
Commission.

The statement indicated that Ghana was among
other African countries should benefit from a period of economic growth thanks to
sustainable ecotourism and this could be achieved based on the abundance of
wildlife heritage.

He drew the audience, the hunters and all
the wildlife company actors to cease their activities during the
closed season and be wary during the open season to help create a
environment and improve the socio-economic status of citizens.

The statement also advised the public to
obtain a license before hunting during the hunting season that was to begin
from 2 December to 31 July 2020, adding that compliance with this regulation will be
support for achieving Goal 15 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG15).

He called security agencies to
support the application of the closure ban.
