Kiss the toes of Saint Peter
The largest church in Christendom, Saint Peter’s basilica, was consecrated in 1626. A choral work by Bramante, Raphael, Michelangelo, Maderno and Bernini (among others), it replaced a classical basilica supposed to mark the burial place of the apostle Peter. Bernini’s elliptical colonnaded plaza on the outside, and its stunning bronze canopy above the high altar on the inside, are scaled to fool your eye. In the first chapel on the right is the moving Pietà by Michelangelo. Closer to the altar, the bronze toes of Saint Peter of Arnolfo da Cambio are carried shining with pious kisses. Note that a dress code is respected; no exposed shoulders or knees.
