Apple plans to launch its own streaming service in April, which will offer free original content to device owners. The service should include content from CBS and Viacom, among other production studios.
Samik Chatterjee, an badyst at J.P. Morgan, said in a note that Apple should acquire Netflix to strengthen its position as a content creator.
"We believe that Netflix is the best strategic choice to be a leader in both engagement and original content, differentiating itself from simple content aggregators," he said. "We think it's worth acquiring the most successful player in this space, hard to duplicate with a smaller player in this market."
However, Cathie Wood, CEO and CIO of ARK Invest, told CNBC last week that she did not agree with Chatterjee's recommendation.
"They should build – they absolutely must update their content in terms of video, (but) I do not agree that Netflix is a good way to do it," she said. "Netflix is horizontal in terms of platforms, it's on Android, it's on Samsung – what will they do, lose those customers? That makes no sense to me."
Wood added that if Apple spends $ 50 billion on building its own library, it could compete with existing streaming platforms without making an acquisition.
