The Block: ratings climb amid cheating scandal, break with The Voice

The Block benefited from a high-profile cheating scandal and no competition from The Voice on Tuesday night, drawing an impressive 911,000 viewers into the subway.

The ratings, the highest so far this season, will no doubt appeal to nine executives after the long-running remodeling show got off to a disappointing start last month.

The Block has still lagged behind Seven’s The Voice since both shows launched on August 8, but Tuesday’s numbers show there’s still life in the franchise.

The Block gained many viewers due to the fact that The Voice was not aired, with Seven having instead screened a documentary on the Abba group at 7:30 p.m.

However, the show also delivered a lot of drama thanks to a cheating scandal that had been heavily promoted on Nine for weeks.

Elsewhere in ratings, Home and Away had an audience of 662,000 on the subway while ABBA Fever shot 526,000 against The Block and Australian Survivor (707,000).

In subsequent time slots, Channel 10’s The Cheap Seats was watched by 348,000 in all five capitals, while The Hundred with Andy Lee climbed to 413,000.

Tuesday’s The Block saw a cheating scandal unfold after someone took a photo of the show’s production schedule and leaked it to contestants within week one.

After suspicion fell on Love Island twins Josh and Luke Packham, Tanya Guccione finally confessed to producers that she was the first person to see the photo.

The saga began when someone broke into host Scott Cam’s office and took a photo of the whiteboard that showed the series’ filming schedule – including the dates of each challenge, private tours and furniture consultations.

Anyone who saw the photo would have the benefit of being able to plan their specs weeks in advance or pre-order something for a specific part.

Ronnie and Georgia Caceres shed light on the scandal this week, confirming that the Packhams had already shown them a photo of the program in question.

The brothers admitted to seeing the photo, but did not reveal the source until Tuesday’s episode, when Georgia finally confessed to her involvement.

She sat down next to Luke and admitted to a producer that an “ex-tradie” had sent her the image during the first week of filming.

Tanya first explained that it was sent to her Block phone number, before going back and correcting herself, claiming it was sent to her “home number”.

She told the producers that she showed the photo to her husband, who didn’t want anything to do with it.

Tanya continued, “I sent it to Luke and I said, ‘Hey, do you know about this? A tradition sent it to me. Is this common knowledge?

– So that’s the truth, Luke got it from me. I got it from a former The Block.

Luke interjected, “Yeah, and then with the information, obviously I hadn’t seen it, then I passed it on.”

Tanya subsequently seemed relieved to have shared “her truth,” but a hidden camera recording her conversation with Vito earlier today revealed a flaw in the story.

She said: “I’m going to tell the camera what happened to the tradie who sent me the picture. It was a number I didn’t know and I deleted it right away.

“The thing is… that was my Block number, yeah… you always have to have the same cohesive story,” she quietly told her husband.

The impact of Tanya’s confession will cause an almighty clash between the candidates at a reunion in tomorrow’s episode.

The Block continues Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. on Channel Nine
