Burn doctors are urging people not to participate in the "boiling water challenge" after eight participants have been hospitalized after trying to keep up with the viral trend.

The "challenge" of throwing boiling water in the air above your head has emerged during the recent polar vortex.

If successful, the result is an impressive Instagram or Facebook video that shows a perfect wave of powdery white steam over the brave participant's head. However, when the wind turns in the wrong direction, the consequences can be serious.

This lesson was learned the hard way during a recent Chicago experiment, in which one family, a group of eight people aged three to 53, was hospitalized at the Loyola Medicine Burn Treatment Center.
