The French and British authorities are looking for a small plane carrying the Argentinian footballer Emiliano Sala, missing Monday night.
Sala, a 28-year-old striker who signed for Premier League club Cardiff City FC on Saturday, was traveling to Cardiff from Nantes when the plane lost radar contact near the Anglo-Norman Alderney Island.
An officer involved in the search for the aircraft said that he was not expecting to find survivors.
Channel Islands Airsearch chief officer, John Fitzgerald, told the Associated Press news agency that he "did not expect anyone to be alive."
"I do not think the coastguards are either, we just do not know how he disappeared." Fitzgerald said.
Helicopters and rescue boats conducted research on the single-engine Piper Malibu aircraft on approximately 2,600 square kilometers of the Channel Islands.
"At that time, no trace of the missing plane had been found," Guernsey police said.
A spokesman for the French aviation authority, DGAC, confirmed that Sala was on board.
On Monday, Sala was in Nantes to bid farewell to his former teammates while he was going to Cardiff to play in his new team.
In his last two articles on Instagram, Sala posted photos of him after signing for Cardiff City and a photo of his former teammates in Nantes with the caption "The Last Goodbye."
Sala's father told the Argentine media that he did not know what had happened until a friend told him so.
"I did not know anything because I was not at home, I'm a truck driver, a friend who saw him on TV told me, I'm desperate. that it ends well, "said Horacio Sala.
Sala has signed with Cardiff City for the record fee of about $ 19 million after playing for FC Nantes since 2012.
Mehmet Dalman, president of the Welsh football club, said the club was "very worried".
