Wastewater from the system infiltrates the streets of Tema
GHAPROHA (Association of Progressive Hotels of Ghana) threatens to sue the Metropolitan Assembly of Tema for its inability to properly maintain Tema's central sewer system.
According to them, the sewer system has not experienced any major rehabilitation over the past 18 years, which has stifled it.
"Crude feces spill uncontrollably into kitchens, restaurants and hotel rooms," the Association said in a statement, noting that the situation was having a negative impact on their business.
"The situation is greatly affecting the hotel sector in Tema, as many restaurants and hotels are losing business and spending a lot of money repairing portions of these sewers," said GHAPROHA.
According to the badociation, hotels in the city have become powerless "because we can not meet the standards required for food safety and hygiene" because of the conditions created for the deterioration of sewers.
They stated that the wear and tear had damaged the pipes and tree roots near the sewer lines, drains and manholes.
"This has resulted in the mbadive siltation of sewer lines and the invasion of the system by rodents and other creatures.
"Oil deposits from factories, garages and the disposal of solid waste such as household rags and tampons smother the sewer lines, making them ineffective," said GHAPROHA .
According to them, although the TMA has had many times the badurance of rehabilitating the sewer lines, nothing has been done to make the situation worse.
They said it was at the point where they had to seek legal redress.
