The director of the University of Education, Winneba, justified the promotion in 2014 of Professor E. N Abekah, chairman of the school's board of directors, from badociate professor to professor, despite a growing reaction .

The Association of University Teachers of Ghana (UTAG) has already asked the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to investigate a possible conflict of interest against Professor Abekah.

They claim that the chairman of the board of directors abused his authority to grant him the status of full professor. But the university maintains that she has followed proper procedures to promote the board chair.

The Attorney General of the University, Ernest Azutigah, told Citi News that the procedure was respected.

Professor Abekah filed his promotion application ten months ago, in accordance with the regulations.

"As was the case in the universities, your promotion takes effect from the time you submitted your application and it was accepted. So that's the situation, "he explained.

In an earlier statement signed by Paul Osei Barima, the university registrar explained that the school had reviewed the pre-retirement promotion notice of 12 to 6 months in 2017.

The Governing Council has stated that the revised 12 month notice position "is more disadvantageous than beneficial for the senior members of the STE".

This had a positive effect for Professor Abakah, who was one of the four core members who submitted their treatment request in 2013.

"The available records indicated that Professor E.N ABakah's earlier application for promotion to full professor status prior to his retirement in September 2014 was dated December 2013."

He had also submitted his application 10 months before his retirement, so before the required six-month notice.

The university added that Professor Abakah was recused after the meeting because of his promotion as a teacher, in response to conflict of interest claims.
