About two years after the allegations of harbadment against star Jeffrey Tambor to put Transparent on hold, the award-winning Amazon Emmy series returns for a final curtain call. But his main character interpreted by Tambor, the transgender Maura Pfefferman, will be nowhere in sight. The final feature of the acclaimed series will be a musical episode that kills Maura early and follows "the Pfefferman family as they come together in their grief and celebrate his life."
The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Transparent Jeffrey Tambor's character, Maura, will be eliminated in the final, which will complete the five seasons of the series with a long musical episode.
"When is the time to do the Transparent towards the end, it was clear that saying goodbye to Maura was our way forward, " Transparent creator and executive producer Jill and Faith Soloway said in a statement released to the press Thursday. "In this musical finale, we dramatize the death of Maura in a comedy and melancholy odyssey told through the happy prism of melody and dance."
Now, it's certainly a lot to be treated in one sentence (A musical episode! The central character is gone!), But the only thing that stands out clearly is that Transparent made the way to many shows before him by killing actors characters in light of their misdeeds of the real world. Whether it's a badual badault (Kevin Spacey in Room of cards) or racist political statements (Roseanne Barr), this seems to have become the norm for television broadcasts.
however, Transparent brings a disturbing baggage: the history of violence against transgender people. Although the death of this man is not announced – it is just as likely that Maura will die outside the natural causes – I wonder if the death of the main transgender character of the series, whose transition was the backbone of the series, will be well done in a musical episode. The show has never made a musical episode, even though it's a common gadget with long-running shows, and it's likely to be shocking for viewers who will lose their main character.
But you have to admire the audacity of Jill Soloway to close the show this way. Faced with the departure of her main actor amid allegations of harbadment and inappropriate behavior, the designer and the writer decided to get into the concept. Soloway writes and directs the extended finale, titled "The Transparent Musicale Finale", with her sister, executive producer Faith Soloway, who writes music and lyrics.
The last installment of Transparent will be published on Amazon Prime in September 2019.
