The company Blockchain Tech launches a beta version of the satellite API for data dissemination

Blockchain's technology company, Blockstream, launches the beta version of its Blockstream Satellite API, designed to help developers broadcast data via the company's satellite network. The launch was revealed in the official announcement released Jan. 16.

This decision follows the expansion of the company's satellite service in December, when it began broadcasting the Bitcoin blockchain (BTC) on a global scale. Blockstream's Bitcoin space initiative would aim to free the cryptocurrency network from dependency on the terrestrial Internet connection and thus increase its robustness.

Blockstream's latest data agnostic product makes it possible to use its satellites for encrypted messaging, users paying for the service via the Lightning test network, which means that the broadcast is free at the moment. Developers can send messages via a RESTful API (application programming interface), while users will be able to send messages via the Blockstream website.

The team behind Blockstream Satellite API has limited the maximum size of messages, so that everyone can be forwarded in less than ten seconds. The announcement further notes that developers are expected to use their own encryption, fragmentation and rebadembly of large messages in cases where they require the transmission of larger data bits.

Since the product targets privacy, only a specific user or group of users can decrypt the received data, which is sent from the Internet via broadcast media. Lightning Network provides an extra level of privacy by disconnecting the payment source from the destination, notes the ad.

Blockstream unveiled for the first time its plan to develop its satellite network in August 2017, claiming to want to "connect everyone on the planet" in the face of what he described as a global Internet penetration limited and even more limited online freedom.

Last week, NASA (US National Aeronautics and Space Administration) proposed a block-based air traffic management system that would employ a permitted blockchain open to allow secure, private and anonymous communication with air traffic services.
