Victims of the shooting in Ayawaso West Wuogon’s 2019 by-election said the government still failed to act on the recommendation to pay them compensation for the harm caused to them.
Security guards deployed to the constituency on by-election day went on a rampage even before the election began.
Following the mess, the Emile Short Committee, among others, recommended that the victims of the violence of January 31, 2019 be compensated for the damage they suffered at the hands of government security forces.
In a meeting with former President John Mahama, the shooting victims said none of them had received payment from the government.
The spokesperson for the victims, Abdul-Razak Garba, stressed that the victims and their families are struggling because of this painful experience.
He recounted how some of the assaulted victims went through life-changing experiences, some requiring further surgeries, others incapacitated for life, another stroke victim and one deceased. as a result of internal bleeding caused by gunshot wounds.
The victims and their families were in the office of the former president and 2020 NDC presidential candidate to thank him for his support for them.
Mr. Garba expressed the group’s appreciation to Mr. Mahama for his compassion and for paying the cost of all their treatments, including major surgeries.
In his remarks, Mr. Mahama expressed his condolences to the victims and their families.
He also pledged to continue to support members in any way possible, but stressed that it is the duty of the state to compensate victims as recommended.
Mr. Mahama expressed his shock at the level of impunity which he said continues to define the government of Akufo-Addo and Bawumia.
He added that impunity, when left unchecked, leads to unbridled violence and that is why the killings of innocent Ghanaians in Ejura and Techiman have taken place.
He encouraged the victims to hold their heads up high and warned them to be careful of the people who caused harm by turning around to laugh at them that their party does not support them enough.
Mr. Mahama pledged that, however long it takes, the NDC will pursue all possible means to ensure that those who committed the crimes are punished and that all compensation owed to the victims is paid in full.
“Ghana must not forget what happened,” he said.
