This is reflected in a 124-year-old patent for perforated toilet paper that was dug up by Huffington Post reporter Owen Williams, who shared it on Twitter a few years ago.

The argument in favor of hanging different ways has become long and complicated. If it's set to "finished", it's easier to find the end, but the "under" fans will notice that it looks sharper this way.
Seth Wheeler, the estimated inventor of the humble peat bog, also showed that his creation was hooked to the paper placed above the roll. A quick reading of the Google Patents archive also seems to confirm this hypothesis.
Of course, though, you choose to hang your roll of toilet paper, it's up to you who decide. And we are not convinced that this will really solve the debate on the best solution.
