The deputy mayor of the Paris environment on Tuesday announced a climate emergency at a town council meeting, following other cities and national parliaments that have already made the crisis statement.
"Paris, like other cities, declares a climate emergency," said Celia Blauel, deputy mayor in charge of the environment, at the meeting.
France hosted the COP21 climate change conference in 2015, during which the agreement on climate change was signed. Blauel said Paris itself must follow the agreement that countries pledged to prevent global temperatures from rising by two degrees Celsius. The goal would be to maintain a ceiling of 1.5 ° C.
Blauel took the opportunity to talk about the creation of a "climate academy" in Paris to raise awareness of the climate crisis.
The management of the climate emergency is a priority for socialist mayor Anne Hidalgo, who acknowledges that it is a major concern for Parisian voters.

Paris follows in the footsteps of the British Parliament, which was the first to declare a climate emergency on 1 May, with the Irish Parliament adopting the motion 10 days later.
The most important city to have made this announcement is the city of New York, which declared the state of emergency on June 26th.
About 650 local officials in cities and towns around the world have declared a climate emergency, according to The Climate Mobilization, an American NGO that calls for more municipalities to make this declaration.
However, US President Donald Trump said in June 2017 that the United States would withdraw from the agreement, while many cities have decided to respect the agreement within the confines of their city.
