Mouzoko was shot dead during an attack on a hospital in Butembo, in the east of the country. The WHO said it had been deployed as part of a medical team to help control the Ebola outbreak that began last August in North Kivu. .
The epidemic is the second deadliest ever recorded after the outbreak that hit West Africa in 2014-2016, killing more than 11,300 people. The health ministry said Wednesday it had counted 885 deaths in DR Congo following the latest outbreak.
But efforts to reverse highly contagious haemorrhagic fever have been hampered not only by fighting, but also by community resistance to preventive measures, safe care facilities and safe burials.
On Wednesday, dozens of doctors and nurses protested the physical risks they were facing in Butembo, calling on the authorities to provide adequate security in early May, otherwise they would strike.
