At least 24 people were killed and 31 wounded on Sunday during the derailment of a freight train carrying stowaways in the Democratic Republic of Congo, police and medical services said.

The accident occurred in the province of Kasai, in the center-west of the country of Central Africa.

"We have recovered 24 bodies, mainly children, which is a temporary toll because the wagons are still overthrown," said a railway police official in Bena Leka, 140 km north of Kananga, one of the main cities of Kasai. AFP.

"Most of the pbadengers are stowaways because it is a freight train, we have suspended the search because the night has just fallen in the area," said the source, who was on the site.

"Several cars have fallen to the water on the bridge over the Luembe River and five more are still overturned."

Serious casualties were transported to the nearby Kakenge hospital.

"We are overwhelmed by the number of injured, we are working urgently and we have already registered 31 wounded," said Dr. Jean Claude Tshimanga of Kakenge Hospital.

The national railway company confirmed the derailment.

This is the third train accident in about a month in central DRC. Five people were killed in a train accident last month at Kalenda station.

Railway accidents in the large and former Belgian colony are frequent and often fatal because of the deterioration of the track and the aging locomotive of the 1960s.
