Accra, July 20, GNA – Professor Kwabena
Frimpong-Boateng, Minister of the Environment, Science, Technology and
Innovation, said the continued destruction of the east is
self-inflicted and must be stopped.

"When we destroy the environment, we destroy
ourselves. We rely on nature for our critical needs, including medicine, food,
air and water for free, yet we show signs of ingratitude by destroying
nature through activities such as deforestation, mining, air pollution and
poor waste management, "he said.

The minister said it was the sacred duty of
all to take steps to protect and preserve the environment by growing trees,
using water wisely and eliminating waste, especially plastics, appropriately.

Speaking at the opening of the ninth
Supreme Biennial Convention of Subordinates of the Knights of Saint John International
and Ladies Auxiliary (KSJI), Professor Frimpong-Boateng said that nature did not need to
man but man needs nature to survive.

The three-day convention, which is on the
theme "Our environment, our heritage: the role of civil society (KSJI) in its
Preservation ", seeks to review KSJI's activities and plan its future.

Prof Frimpong-Boateng said because of the love for
money, some people resort to harmful practices such as the conservation of
fish with formalin, a chemical used to preserve corpses and with the help of pesticides
in the palm wine industry to pollute the environment and harm the health of
people.

In the context of the steps taken by the Government to
preserve the environment, the Minister stated that he was implementing
change programs to promote renewable energies, afforestation and the use of
cookers.

Prof Frimpong-Boateng said 20 million dollars
been invested in projects in the savannah to provide farmers access to water
in the dry season, input supply and promotion of soil sustainability
technologies.

Monsignor John Bonaventure Kwofie, the
Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, said that human beings misinterpreted Genesis
1:28 which says, "… be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth
and submit it … "

He said instead of taking care of such a
the heirs instead exploited the resources of nature without replacing or replacing
conservation.

"Our
well-being depends on nature. We must be responsible otherwise we will perish
if the destruction continues, he said.

Rev Kwofie said that questions about the environment
was paramount for the Catholic Church, hence the recent appeal of Pope Francis
Encyclical Laudato Si, to the world to stop the destruction that the man made
to the environment.

"While directly attacking the environment,
the scope of the document is broader in many ways because it is not limited to the human
on the environment, but also on the many philosophical, theological and
cultural causes that threaten human relationships with nature and man to
mutually in various circumstances.

Major General James Dasah, Supreme
Chairman of the subordinate commandery of KSJI, said that the group was ready to badociate
with institutions for environmental protection and urged the government to
deal with individuals who flout environmental laws.

While congratulating the security agencies for
taking steps to end the frequency of kidnappings, he called for security
services to continue to protect churches as a result of attacks in the
subregion.

KSJ is an international Catholic fraternal
service organization. Incorporated in 1886, members of the organization are hiring
themselves in the service of the Catholic Church, their communities and the
fraternity, with individual units or commanderies established in a
parish.
