The Peace Council, with the support of technical experts and the two main political parties (NDC, NPP), welcomed the decision to present a working paper on a roadmap to put an end to political vigilance following the reports presented by various stakeholders at the meeting.

After a lengthy deliberation, the parties reached an agreement on Tuesday, May 28 at the fourth and last meeting in Peduase.

In line with the previous communiqué signed by both parties on the dissolution and prohibition of the use of these groups, both parties agreed to "process the road map" within four weeks.

A code of conduct drafted by the National Peace Council should also be considered as one of the expected results of the preparation of the roadmap.

NDC and NPP had previously agreed to begin discussions with stakeholders and experts, including representatives of civil society organizations, security agencies and religious view of the elimination of political vigilance.

To this end, these experts received the platform to present an overview of the nature, scope and dangers that each faces in its quest to deal with the phenomenon as well as possible ways to eliminate the problem.

The appeal of President Akufo-Addo and the draft law on vigilance

The series of meetings of recent weeks facilitated by the Peace Council, was made necessary by the appeal of President Akufo-Addo in his speech on the state of the nation to the leaders of the two main political parties (NPP and NDC) to help find a lasting solution. the threat of political vigilance in Ghana.

In the meantime, with the aim of dissolving and banning the creation of self-defense groups in the country, a vigilantism bill has been tabled in Parliament for consideration and approval by the House.

The said bill has now been submitted to the Committee on the Constitution, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs for examination under an emergency certificate.
