The director of Napoli, Carlo Ancelotti, confirmed that Nicolas Pepe's agent was at the hotel of the Italian club to negotiate transfers.
The news will be a blow to Manchester United, who has been closely badociated with a move for the Ivorian striker.
The Red Devils are considering Pepe as possible substitute for Romelu Lukaku, target of Inter Milan and who was tipped to leave in the window of summer transfers.
But they will have to act quickly if they want to beat Napoli at his signature.
"I met Pepe's agents," confirmed Ancelotti. "They were at our hotel.
"It is normal for us to meet to discuss possible negotiations, it is useless to hide it from its agents here: we are interested in Pepe.
"Pepe is a broad striker, we want to find someone who can play between the lines, not to mention that Milik is a central striker, but also strong with his feet."
The Ancelotti admission comes as Pepe's agent, Samir Khiat, has turned to social media to prevent Pepe from being on the verge of signing for Manchester United.
Khiat posted a tweet saying that Pepe was about to join the Old Trafford club and wrote "fake news" next door.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already completed the signatures of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer, but is looking for new recruits.
