Global oil and gas discoveries continue to show promising growth, with new discoveries totaling 6.7 billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe) in the first half of 2019, according to the report. Rystad Energy's upstream data badessment conducted in the middle of the year.
The average monthly discovered volumes of 1,123 million boe since the beginning of the year reflect an increase of approximately 35% compared to the 827 million boe registered in 2018. Until 2019 was a year of gas discoveries, holding a majority stake (63%). in relation to liquids, a phenomenon not observed since 2016.
"Offshore discoveries in Russia, Guyana, Cyprus, South Africa and Malaysia are propelling an already very successful year for international E & P companies. Major oil companies and integrated national oil companies, with their appetite for risk and success in border regions, have dominated the performance of conventional exploration, accounting for more than 80% of the volumes discovered in 2019. L & # 39 Rystad Energy's badysis has identified 56 global conventional discoveries so far this year, including 30 off the coast.
In the first half of 2019, Russia led the group in terms of total discovered resources, followed by Guyana, Cyprus, South Africa and Malaysia.
Russia
Gazprom has announced two major gas discoveries in the Kara Sea, north-west of Yamal Peninsula, Western Siberia: Dinkov and Nyarmeyskoye. Together, these discoveries represent nearly 1.5 billion boe of recoverable gas resources. Dinkov, the largest of the two deposits, holds 1.1 billion boe of resources, making it the largest discovery since the beginning of the year.
Guyana
In Guyana, ExxonMobil's oil discoveries continue in the Stabroek block. Three major discoveries were reported in 2019: Tilapia, Yellowtail (oil) and Haimara (gas condensate). These three deposits could collectively contain nearly 800 million boe of recoverable reserves. The success rate of ExxonMobil in the 15 wells drilled so far in the Stabroek block is an impressive 86%. The first oil in the block is scheduled for mid-2020.
Cyprus
ExxonMobil also made the headlines in the Mediterranean, earning its first success with the discovery of giant gas Glaucus off Cyprus. The discovery is expected to contain 700 million boe in recoverable resources. This is the second major discovery in Cypriot waters after the gas discovery of Eni Calypso, whose resources are similar. ExxonMobil is preparing a campaign to evaluate this discovery in 2020. Eni and its partner Total are also considering launching a five-well drilling program off Cyprus later this year.
South Africa
Total's wild cat Brulpadda completed in February in blocks 11B / 12B made a great discovery of condensate in the Paddavissie fairway of the Lower Cretaceous in deep waters of South Africa. Total and its block partners said the discovery could contain one billion barrels or more. The results of the PVT badysis and the technical validation are still being evaluated in order to confirm the size of the resource. Rystad Energy currently estimates that the size of discovery resources is between 500 million and 600 million boe. Four additional prospects – Luiperd, Platanna, Woudboom and Blbadop – have been eliminated from the channel risk and a multi-well drilling campaign targeting oil in the eastern part of the channel is expected to begin in early 2020. The campaign could be carried out by steps, the operational window in the area being limited to December to March. The prospect of Luiperd, with a pre-drilling resource estimate of more than 500 million boe, could be the next step.
Malaysia
Thailand's state-owned energy company PTTEP unveiled a major offshore gas discovery with the Lang Lebah-1RDR2 exploration well in the SK410B license in Malaysian waters. Rystad Energy estimates that the discovery could contain between 2 trillion and 2.5 trillion cubic feet of gas. This discovery is considered the most important discovery ever made by PTTEP as an operator and is part of the company's strategy to expand its footprint in the region.
