H.Bomberguy, aka Harry Brewis, plays Nintendo 64 streaming Donkey Kong 64 intermittently for more than 50 hours. It does so to raise money for Mermaids, a UK-based charitable organization that provides support to transgender children, adolescents and their families. What began as a "grudge" against an Irish comedian who opposes the charity has become a wild and surprising success; Brewis has raised more than $ 280,000 to date and his stream has featured cameo appearances from Condemn co-creator John Romero, activist Chelsea Manning and US Congressman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Brewis started his stream on Twitch on January 18th. In a YouTube video announcing the stream, he said he would never have been beaten. Donkey Kong 64 like a kid. Its old backup file indicates more than 59 hours of play, but only 69% completion. Brewis' goal for charities was to beat the game against the N64 100%.
"I want to destroy Donkey Kong 64," he said.
His other target of destruction was writer-director-comedian Graham Linehan, whose work includes sitcoms Father Ted and The computer crowd. In a message posted on the forum, Linehan promoted an email campaign involving Mermaids funding by the National Lottery. Brewis explained that Linehan was the catalyst for her fundraising efforts.
"All proceeds from this feed will go to Mermaids, a charity that works to provide resources and support to young people with gender dysphoria," said Brewis. "I chose to support this badociation because, as a person living in Britain, I find that the media discussion around this problem in my country, especially in its tabloids, is terribly misinformed. And I would like to do my part to help support the people doing the hard work of contributing to people's thinking on an important issue.
"I chose Mermaids especially because, when they were designated as the National Lottery Fund, Graham Linehan, a comedy writer who worked on a good show, 20 years ago, is a very normal man who is just very angry. Nowadays, Mumsnet has been talking to transgender people all day and telling them to send a woman from the National Lottery en mbade and that the funding is currently under review. So well done, Graham! You have a large audience and the power to choose to fight for progress in all the forms we need in the world today and you have used it to make sure that some children will not have access to useful resources.
The Brewis stream had already raised more than $ 50,000 in the first 24 hours, quickly approaching an ever-increasing fundraising goal. People like John Romero, Jim Sterling and Chelsea Manning made their appearance in the creek, apparently via the Brewis Discord Channel, but that's Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democratic Representative of the United States at the 14th Congressional District from New York, which is Twitter, which has attracted the most attention.
So how did she find herself there? We can thank Aaron Sorkin, creator of the television series The west wing and The press room.
Sorkin appeared on CNN this week and spoke to host Fareed Zakaria, saying that he liked "the new generation of young people who had just been elected to Congress," but that they "must now stop behaving themselves" like young people. (Ocasio-Cortez is the youngest 29-year-old) Sorkin said the Democrats had "the opportunity to be the party not stupid," adding, "it's not just about the transgender toilet – it's a Republican argument with which they are trying to distract you. "
Ocasio-Cortez criticized Sorkin's comments in a Twitter feed and concluded with a retweet of sirens who promoted the Donkey Kong 64 current. Shortly after – and after many requests on Twitter for Ocasio-Cortez to appear on the airwaves – she joined Discord and spoke with H.Bomberguy to help fundraise. Ocasio-Cortez said that although she never owned a Nintendo 64, her cousin did, and thanks to games like Super Mario 64 and Pokémon Snapshe considers it "probably the best system of all".
Apparently, Ocasio-Cortez had games on the brain this weekend, based on another pair of tweets in which she name fallen dance dance revolution and brought the clbadic Zero Wing even "All your databases belong to us" out of internet storage.
If you want to watch H.Bomberguy do his job (and make a donation), he continues to broadcast it.
