Theater queens connect with fans of A tree hill and themselves in a unique way.

Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton Morgan and Bethany Joy Lenz suffered sexual harassment and intimidation at the hands of showrunner Mark Schwahn during their time at One Tree Hill and shared their stories with the public to recoup their experience.

Sometimes it has not been easy.

“It’s hard to go back and look at some things and remember the tears in the trailers because we didn’t want to be put in lingerie,” Bush said. I will never forget, walking in there, on the phone with Mark Schwahn one day. (I said) I didn’t sign up for this. I didn’t sign up for you to write so that I was in my underwear every episode. I’m uncomfortable with it and I’m 21. I can’t imagine how uncomfortable the 15 and 16 year old girls watching the show feel. We got into the game and he said, “No, you’re going to do whatever we write for you. And I said no, you know. Right. I just remember saying, I’m not. I didn’t sign up for this.

According to Bush, she told Schwahn that he would have to hire another actress to play the role of Brooke Davis, with the understanding that she would be “half-naked” the entire time. Schwahn responded with a rude remark on her breasts which he said viewers were eager to see.

“And I remember how small it made me feel,” she said. “And then I realized that’s why every time I try on, I’m given a Wonder bra.”

The writers of the series upgraded the roles of the female characters after Bush’s complaints.

“Bush is looking forward to revisiting some storylines, including the time Brooke and Haley found an apartment together in Season 3,” Variety said. Another highlight came in the Season 4 episode ‘Pieces of You’, where a class assignment leads Brooke to tag a photo with all of the ways she doesn’t feel good enough.

“This episode happened because of a conversation I had with our writers,” she told Variety. “Talk about what it’s like to be a woman.”

E! fired Schwahn in 2017 as showrunner of The Royals after the allegations of his conduct on A tree hill surfaced.

Burton Morgan notes that the female cast members on One Tree Hill would have been treated better if there had been a woman in a position of power.

Drama Queens debuted in June and is a hit for iHeart. It attracts new fans who discovered the show on Hulu and other streaming services, Lunz said.
