Three newly approved drugs attract national attention. The first is an oral form of a potent opioid badgesic available by injection since 1984. Dsuvia is sufentanil's sublingual (under the tongue) version, which was approved by the FDA in November 2018. Dsuvia is 1,000 times more powerful than morphine. The FDA says that this could be useful for use on the battlefield or in hospitals. Critics fear that drugs will end up on the streets, compounding the opioid crisis in the country. Another noteworthy drug is the first marijuana prescription drug. Cannabidiol (Epidiolex) was approved by the FDA in June 2018 for the treatment of seizures badociated with rare forms of epilepsy. The drug is made from a component of marijuana that causes neither intoxication nor euphoria. Finally, Baloxavir marboxil (Xofluza), the first new antiviral used for 20 years to fight the flu, was authorized by the FDA in October 2018. It is a pill at a dose that can help reduce the duration of the flu if it is taken within 48 hours after the onset of symptoms. A warning: the new antiviral has not been tested in the elderly yet.
