Jean Mensa, President of the European Commission
Donkor Fuseini, former district chief of Sekyere Afram-Plains, in the Ashanti region, asked the Electoral Commission to extend the registration exercise limited to the electoral areas of the constituency from Sekyere Afram-Plains, in the region of Ashanti.
Jean Mensa, chairman of the commission, said Monday that his team would proceed with the registration process in its district offices despite public opposition to the project.
Although the Commission has stated that it will try to facilitate the process in disadvantaged areas, the opposition NDC has claimed that many potential voters could be deprived of the right to vote.
Mr. Fusieni told Citi News that Afram-Plains needed to be re-examined because of their particular geographical location.
"They [EC] We are only punishing people or trying to make sure that they are not registered at all. Where does the right to register on the register of electors reside?
"We appeal to the Electoral Commission so that, as for us at Sekyere Affram-Plains, our situation is so critical. Unless of course, we consider that the inhabitants of the plains of Sekyere Afram are not Ghanaians, so they do not have the right to register. "
The Commission plans to establish a new register of voters for the upcoming presidential and legislative elections in Ghana after an agreement with the different political parties.
But since then, the NDC has opposed this initiative, saying it would not be in the interests of voters.
The party is therefore committed to resisting the EC's attempts to conduct the exercise in the district offices of the Commission.
However, the EC rejected allegations that the envisaged district-level exercise would deprive Ghanaians of their rights.
The Commission argued that the district registration plan included in the measures to modernize its IT infrastructure.
