The family of the late social activist Ibrahim Mahammed [Kaaka Macho] described the three-member committee that investigated Ejura’s unrest in June 2021 as a mouthpiece for fake news.
The family said there were flaws in the Committee’s findings as contained in the report submitted to the government, hence their disagreement with the report.
According to them, the Committee, which included the judge of the Court of Appeal, George Kingsley Koomson, the security expert, Dr Vladimir Antwi Danso and the executive director of Penplusbyte, a civil society organization, Juliet Amoah, n has not done due diligence on the matter.
Speaking to media on Monday, family spokesman Abdul Nafiu Mohammed said the committee based its findings on the testimony of an individual identified as Aminu Mohammed and fled with him.
“The failure of the Committee to perform the most basic due diligence on this story is disconcerting, the result has been that the Committee has become the mouthpiece for fake news and a senseless conspiracy theory,” he said. he declares.
He said the family is disappointed with the Committee because it also did not submit Aminu’s testimony “who they [the committee] described as a friend of Kaaka and a resident of Ejura even on the most basic examination.
“In fact, in reaching their conclusion, they relied mainly on the testimony of a certain Aminu Mohammed, an individual whom the state chose to hear behind closed doors.
“Obviously, he was someone whose testimony was conceived as a mind-boggling factor and was therefore largely excluded from wider public scrutiny, but his [testimony] was the only evidence the Committee cited as confirming its conclusion that Kaaka was killed because of a family feud, ”he said.
The spokesperson also noted that the witness was living in Burkina Faso and was not in Ejura when Kaaka was killed or during the unrest in Ejura.
“This individual had not even been in contact with Kaaka for at least 10 years,” he added.
Once again, Abdul Nafiu Mohammed refuted the indication that there were disagreements between Kaaka and his brother, Idi and that Kaaka had caused his brother’s arrest for three days in 2020 as the witness had said.
“The individual claimed that Kaaka caused Idi’s arrest sometime in 2020. According to the individual, Idi had been held in Ejura police cells for about three days, and that Aminu had advised Kaaka to leave Idi in the cells for about a week, he recalls.
He added, “Said Aminu even alleged that Kaaka’s mother paid Ejura police a bribe to secure Idi’s release after the three days. He also claimed that Idi visited Nigeria shortly after his release.
Giving credit to their position that the committee did not do a thorough job, he said “despite the onerous work of this individual’s statement, at no time did the so-called committee of inquiry seek to establish s ‘there was, in fact, a record of arresting Idi in 2020 or attempting to cross-check with the police any fantasy story told to them.
“They did not even verify if Idi had indeed traveled out of the country in 2020 as said person claims,” he said.
The committee, he added, decided to ignore the obvious absurdities of the testimony, including the charge of bribery and corruption brought against the police department, and relied on the statement. of the individual.
“No attempt has been made to collaborate or independently establish any of the claims made by said Aminu Mohammed,” he said.
