The end-of-game theory explains how Thanos really knows Tony Stark

This is one of the recurring questions in the Marvel film universe: how did Thanos know Tony Stark? Although most fans have badumed that Tony's knowledge of Thanos stemmed from the Battle of New York earlier this month. Avengers film, a new theory suggests that Mad Titan's knowledge comes from something else.

In Avengers: war in the infiniteThanos quite easily recognizes Tony Stark and, when asked, Thanos is content to say that he is also cursed with knowledge. It's this knowledge suggested by the user "atradayse" of Reddit as being the root of things, more precisely by the fact that Thanos knows Tony because of its uniqueness.

The theory breaks down, above all, why the idea that Thanos would be familiar with Tony thanks to the first Avengers do not hold enough water. The main points are that Thanos sends people to do his dirty work for him – in this case, Chitauri and Loki. Even if the details of the battle would certainly have been communicated to Thanos, that does not quite explain his recognition of Tony. The theory goes on to explain that Thanos is not even familiar with Peter Quill, a person who managed to briefly hold the power stone and who is the son of a celestial. Quill only gets a rating from The Boyfriend after keeping his promise to Gamora.

This brings us back to the idea that Tony is special, and the theory points to a specific moment in Iron Man in which Obadiah Stane asks Stark Industry scientists to build an arc reactor the same size as Tony. They claim that this can not be done and then, when told that Tony did it in a cave with a box of leftovers, shout "I'm not Tony Stark".

The delivery? Even among the very intelligent, Tony is an anomaly. It is unique, with the intellect that makes it incredibly powerful to the point that it stands out from the pack. In the reasoning of the theory, Thanos recognizes this particularity and, especially after New York, understands that Tony is ready to use his powers, whatever his personal costs.

The theory then suggests that this particular quality is why Dr. Strange abandoned the stone of the time to save Tony from Thanos – Tony is essential to saving the world. On top of that, it might also suggest that it will be Tony himself who will solve the problem of lack of air, for example on the Milano. Tony's wheelhouse is stuck in a potentially life-threatening situation with limited resources and almost no chance of salvation. He has already done so when he built his first arc reactor in this cave. It would not be an exaggeration to see Tony suggest something on the Milano – presumably with Nebula – to keep him safe.

With End of Game being the "end" of the story started in Iron Man More than a decade ago, the fact that Tony finds himself in space with a flying box of flying junk is a very interesting reminder of how it all started.

What do you think? Does this theory explain how Thanos knew Tony? Let us know in the comments below.

Avengers: End of the game opens in theaters April 26.
