Thank God, it's over.
This was certainly our reaction when we heard the final whistle of Inter-Empoli.
It was also our first response to this season, full of dramas, most of which took place off the field.
Yes, we have achieved our goal of qualifying for the Champions League, but that is not a good year. If nothing else, it meant that we had reached the minimum goal of the year, but that does not certify any progress compared to the previous season. Looking back, Inter has never exploited its full potential and the off-road drama has certainly exhausted the concentration of players at the most important time of the year.
Spalletti paid the price with his head. Inter could not afford to start all over again without replacing it. I think the same thing will happen to Icardi and Perisic, even if it depends on what the transfer market has to offer.
And now it's Conté. It seems that even Inter very quickly waited to announce the news, the official statement having been published at 6:00 CET on Friday 31 May. A date which, I believe, will remain in the history of Inter as the beginning of something new, a revivified Inter which will emerge from the dark ages during which Inter have been for eight mediocre long years, with no trophies and in great financial difficulty.
Already in his initial remarks, Antonio Conte has shown that he is of a different level and stature than the coaches we have become accustomed to in the last eight years. In a few interviews, I have identified three that are particularly interesting. Let me develop on that.
First, in the impressive video announcing his appointment, Conte acknowledged that there might be a faction of Inter's fan base that is still watching him with discomfort after his Juventus stint. "Why me, it's because I share the same determination and the same desire for glory as you," said Conté Ten points, sir, you can not erase the past, but you can get everyone together with the future.
Then, in another interview on Inter TV, President Steven Zhang warmly welcomed the Italian coach and asked him if he was "ready for the Pazza Inter". "No, not Pazza. Crazy no more, replied Conté. Good news because after Inter-Empoli, I swear I could not survive other times as crazy as those.
Subsequently, as soon as he arrived in Madrid with the rest of Inter's management before the final of the Champions League, Conte was asked if this was a promising sign since Madrid is reminiscing the most nice memories to all the supporters of Inter. "Yes, but it's time for us to refresh those feelings," replied Conte. In other words, yes, it's always nice to look back, but players and coaches are paid to create memories, not to revisit them.
Antonio Conte will be the highest paid trainer in Italy and one of the best paid in Europe. But his commitment is a strong sign that things are about to change.
Good luck sir.
We are behind you!
