First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo commissioned a 150-seat waiting room on Wednesday for visitors and relatives of patients detained at the Korle-Bu university hospital.
The waiting room, called “The Atlantic Lounge”, was built by First Atlantic Bank at the request of Ms. Akufo-Addo.
It is equipped with toilets and other ancillary facilities, including banking solutions.
It will benefit relatives of patients detained in the hospital emergency departments – the accident emergency department, the trauma unit and the pediatric intensive care units.
Ms Akufo-Addo, who is also the executive director of the Rebecca Foundation, praised the First Atlantic Bank for promptly responding to their request to build a “beautiful, comfortable waiting room” for visitors to the hospital which has approximately 2,000 beds and receives nearly 1,500 visitors daily.
She recalled that in May 2019, when she ordered the Rebecca Akufo-Addo Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, built by the Rebecca Foundation, she observed with concern that the hospital lacked a decent waiting room. for visitors and relatives of patients detained in the hospital emergency room. pupils.
The First Lady said she felt sad at the state of already traumatized relationships who had to wait under trees and other uncomfortable places for news of their hospitalized loved ones.
She therefore decided to seek a partnership through her Foundation by calling on the First Atlantic Bank to provide a decent waiting space to offer comfort, security, peace of mind and protection against the vagaries of the weather. , visitors and relatives of clients.
“I expressed my desire to find a solution to Dr Okoe Boye, who was then Chairman of the Board of Korle Bu. We approached some corporate institutions, including the First Atlantic Bank, to build a waiting room for Korle Bu.
“Fortunately, our waiting area proposal was in line with the Bank’s Corporate Social objectives. The CEO of First Atlantic Bank recognized the enormous relief that such a project would bring to citizens, who have to wait for their relatives and friends to undergo medical treatment, ”said Ms. Akufo-Addo.
The First Lady was therefore happy that the installation was completed on time.
She instructed the hospital management to make sure the place was well maintained and also urged visitors to the facility to keep it clean and follow all hygiene protocols.
Mr. Amarquaye Amar, Chairman of the Board of Directors of First Atlantic Bank, said the project is part of the Bank’s corporate social responsibility activities, stating that “we are proud to have completed the construction of this attractive building in record time; it is intended to serve as a modern and comfortable waiting space for families and friends of patients who are treated at the Korle-Bu University Hospital ”.
He expressed hope that the lounge would remain “fit for purpose” to reduce the distress and fatigue that mothers, children and the public so often felt when visiting Korle-Bu University Hospital.
Dr Opoku Ware Ampomah, Executive Director of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, expressed his gratitude to the First Lady and the leadership of First Atlantic Bank for the facility, which he said would go a long way in comforting parents and patient friends. in their emergency services.
After commissioning, Ms. Akufo-Addo visited the Rebecca Akufo-Addo Pediatric and Intensive Care Unit (USIP), also on the premises of the Korle-Bu hospital, to observe the use and maintenance installation by patients and hospital management.
She said she was satisfied with the quality of facility maintenance and encouraged hospital management to continue their exemplary maintenance culture to ensure that these facilities stand the test of time.
The First Lady reaffirmed the commitment of the Rebecca Foundation to promote the well-being of all Ghanaian women and children and said that she would continue to work in earnest, for their benefit.
