The first case of poliovirus of the year surfaced in the tribal district of Bajaur in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P).

According to Babar Bin Atta, the Prime Minister's contact person for the eradication of polio, the virus was diagnosed in an 11-month-old child. In a message posted on Twitter Saturday, Atta said that in the past three months, six poliovirus cases have been reported in Bajaur.

He added that "due to the negligence shown by the polio eradication team in the district, seven polio workers were expelled last week, last year no poliovirus cases that have been reported in the tribal district. He added that his next goal would be to monitor the performance of the polio eradication teams in Lahore, Faisalabad and Rawalpindi, with traces of poliovirus found in Lahore and Faisalabad wastewater.

The polio eradication campaign in Pakistan has faced many challenges, ranging from refusal of parents to administer drops to aggression by activists against polio teams. Poliomyelitis (polio) is a highly contagious and debilitating virus that targets the nervous system of children and causes partial or complete paralysis of their limbs. Since 1988, reported polio cases worldwide have decreased by more than 99%, but the virus remains endemic in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria.
