FRANKFURT, Germany – Former President of the German Football Association Reinhard Grindel may be in trouble with customs officials due to an undeclared luxury watch.

Nadja Niesen of the prosecutor's office in Frankfurt told the news agency that she had opened a preliminary investigation and that investigations could follow.

Grindel, who resigned from the federation on Tuesday, said in his resignation letter that he had received a watch worth about 6,000 euros ($ 6,700) from Grigoriy. Surkis, then vice president of UEFA and member of the executive committee, in Geneva.

However, Grindel apparently did not declare the watch on his return to Germany.

Goods of a value greater than 430 euros (480 dollars) imported into the country by air must be declared. Grindel said in his resignation that he would post the watch at the customs.
