The new Kop Kid, Sepp van den Berg, may be in the shadow of Virgil van Dijk, but the Dutch teenager stands alongside the Liverpool colossus when it comes to perfectionist.
At just 17, Van den Berg, Jurgen Klopp's first rookie this summer with a modest £ 1.3 million, does not have the powerful presence of his compatriot Van Dijk. But John van 't Schip, the former boss of Van den Berg at PEC Zwolle, thinks the boy will soon become such an important name in Liverpool because he has the same desire to win.
Van 't Schip, who promoted Van den Berg from the Academy's system to Zwolle's first team and oversaw its development before being replaced by Jaap Stam last December, believes Liverpool bought a Dutch diamond .
"Look, Sepp is not the new Franz Beckenbauer. But he is a perfectionist and few young players his age are too, "said Van'T Schip.
"He is like Van Dijk in this respect. A single mistake can make it so cranky. And he shows it too. Technically and tactically, he is ready to play at the highest level. He is fast, he is good in the air. But is he still an adult? No. He was still a schoolboy when we let him train with us because we could see his potential.
"Sepp can be a great player. At the moment, he is not quite ready for this, but he will be ready soon. "
Van den Berg became the youngest player to make his Eredivisie League debut this century at just 16 years and two months old. This had Bayern Munich hoping to sign the young star.
But Liverpool stole them one by catching the teenager – and Van't Schip is convinced that Klopp will not regret taking a kitty.
"If it continues to grow, it will be an excellent signature," he said.
