The Foundation organizes a blood donation exercise

– The Samuel Amo Tobin
Foundation, during the weekend organized a blood donation and health screening
exercise in Accra to help the National Blood Service rebuild the national stock
Blood bank.

The gift
The exercise, which took place in the Atinka Media Village, saw members of the
public screened for various ailments and voluntarily donated blood as part of
annual activities of the Foundation.

In an interview
Harriet Nottinson Asante, Executive Director of Ghana, with the Ghana News Agency
Director of the Foundation, stated that this exercise responded to a call by
the national blood service.

She said the foundation
was not only undertaking the blood donation exercise but was also delivering
free medical service to the public.

Ms. Asante said
it was essential to keep enough blood because pregnant women, accidents
victims of malaria would need blood, adding that it would not be
careful to wait for such a necessary time before making a donation, hence the need to
organize the exercise.

She said last
During the year, more than 265 of them came forward, only three of whom could not give and expressed
hope that this year, 500 people could participate in the blood-making exercise
available at the National Blood Bank.

She urged others
legal entities and natural persons to undertake the aid exercise for the
National Blood Service to avoid situations of blood shortage.

Mr. Stephen
Addai-Baah, Public Relations Officer of the National Blood Service, said
the projection of the Service was to ensure that most Ghanaians voluntarily give blood
on an annual basis.

He said the
Service expected that if 1% of the population gave
blood, it would help to get the national requirement, but that was not
always had the case, the country being generally less than 50%.

He said last
year, the country had about 37% voluntary donations, which was not the case
helpful and urged the public to help the Service to replenish the national stock
Blood bank, adding that it was very helpful to wait for the blood of patients that
patients waiting for blood.

Mr. Addai-Baah
said any healthy individual aged 17 to 60 qualified for
donate blood at least twice a year.

He said the
donation exercise performed by the Samuel Amo Tobin Foundation would go
a long way to increase the level of stocks serving.
