The future of Maurizio Sarri is undergoing further scrutiny. Even his own players admit that finishing sixth is not enough.
Chelsea may miss a spot in the Champions League, he has the worst record of the top six clubs, causing concern among players.
Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta made an overwhelming statement of the club's season after defeat on Sunday at Everton, while defender Antonio Rudiger said their performance was "unacceptable and dangerous".
Azpilicueta, the manager already under pressure, said: "I do not see only the Europa League as the only way to be part of the Champions League because the place of Chelsea should not be sixth in the Premier League, I can not therefore not accept it.
"The Europa League is a way to get into the Champions League, it's a trophy and we will play until the end but we are not in a league position where it can be said that we will not reach the place of the Champions League. .
"If we had won the last two games, we would be third at the international break and we could have said we were already in the Champions League. Obviously, with five other points, we could have been much better. "
The Sarri manager was in danger last month and it seems increasingly likely that he will be leaving this summer unless the club presses the trigger well in advance. They are still in the quarter-finals of the Europa League and this could offer a route to the Champions League that could save him.
The club transfer ban means that they could turn to a manager willing to accept the young players of the club. Mirror Sport revealed last month that Sarri's inability to appeal to the British prospect Callum Hudson-Odoi had also raised concerns.
Rudiger's comments are likely to cause even more concern to Chelsea's hierarchy as he blames himself for the loss to Everton.
Rudiger added, "It's unacceptable we went out and lost the match in 10 minutes.
"We played a good first half and we could have scored a goal or two, but we did not do it.The way we approached the second half is not acceptable. We were pbadive and if you are pbadive against an opponent of this league, it is dangerous.
"It was like the same game against the wolves [last week], just this time we lost. "
