He explained that most of the debts resulting from the judgment resulted from court orders for breach of contract as well as compensation for bodily injury and acquisitions.
Mr. Ofori-Atta made this revelation in Parliament in response to a question by Finance Commissioner Cbadiel Ato Forson about the amount of debt the government has made from January 2017 to date.
Ofori-Atta also said the current government has paid more than 280 million GHAR in court debt since taking office in 2017.
He said that the government, when he took office in January 2017, faced a debt outstanding in excess of 489 million GH ¢.
He explained that a number of cases had been pending in the courts, over which over 197 million GHs had crystallized, bringing the total to 679,076,438.15 GH ¢.
Mr. Ofori-Atta said that some of these payments are legitimate outcomes of lawsuits but that others are painful because they result from unethical conduct by officers to whom he has been entrusted the responsibility to take care of the country's resources.
He added that these unpaid debts continued to pose a serious risk to the country's budget, and announced that measures had been taken to minimize debt cases as much as possible.
This, he said, involves "prioritizing judgment cases in the legal departments, ensuring a correct resolution file and negotiating with plaintiffs to avoid costly lawsuits and judgments" .
